Yep. They were terrible. The end of the grays on every post was just dozens of people making the same (often lame) joke via image notation. In theory I could see it as being useful, but in practice it seemed to just encourage people to post without reading.

It only works on less busy forums. Somewhere like Jalopnik that gets 100k+ views it got to be a bit much.

I wish image annotations could be turned back on by the author for posts that would benefit from it the most. Like new car reveals, spy shots, and car show photodumps, where commenters are likely to want to call attention to certain details.
